The competitions which are directly organised by FIFA are:
(a) FIFA World Cup
The World Cup which take place very four years and is open to all senior teams of National Associations affiliated to the organisation. Started since 1930, first winner was Uruguay. The Organising Committee organises on behalf of FIFA.
(b) The Olympic Football Tournament
This competition takes place at the time of the Olympic Games. It is open to all National Associations affiliated to FIFA who are at the same time IOC members. Age limit for this competition is 23 but with a provision for inclusion of 3 older players in the final tournament. 1st was England in 1908.
(c) World Youth Championship for the
FIFA/Coca- Cola Cup
This competition takes place every two years. It is open to all National Associations affiliated to FIFA. The age limit for this competition is 20 years and below. The first championship took place in Tunisia in 1977.
(d) FIFA U-17 World Championship
The competition started as U-16 in 1985. It was re-named U-17 in 1989. It takes place every two years. It is open to the U-17 teams of all the National Associations affiliated to FIFA. The first edition was hosted by China in 1985.
(e) FIFA Women’s World Championship
This competition takes place every four years. It is open to the female national teams of the National Associations affiliated to FIFA. Participation is open to ladies of 16 years and above. The first edition was held in China in 1991 with the second edition holding in Sweden in 1995 while the next edition was held in USA in 1999.
(f) FIFA 5-A-Side (Indoor) World Football Championship
This competition takes place every four years. It is open to the national teams affiliated to FIFA. There is no age limit for this competition. The first edition was held in 1989 in the Netherlands; the second edition was held in Hong Kong in 1992 while the third edition took place in Spain in 1996.
(g) FIFA Confederations Cup
This is one of the newly introduced competitions by FIFA. The tournament is open to champion team from each of the six Confederations with the World Champions, the host country or another team from the host continent making up the 8 participants.
The maiden edition was held in 1997.
(h) FIFA World Club Championship
This championship had its debut in Mexico in January 2000. It is open to Cup winners at the level of the Confederations.
(i) FIFA Female U-19 Championship
The maiden edition of this championship will hold in Canada in 2002. Preliminaries are already going on at the level of the Confederations. It is open to national team players aged 19 and below.
